Living wage and living income

Decent work is also about remuneration, even more so in the fragile and low-income contexts that are central to this toolbox. Living wage and living income can be useful concepts to explore in this regard, as they provide for contextualized (localized) guidance on what workers (including farmers) should earn to provide for themselves and their families. Both concepts come with active communities of practice, who’s resources the toolbox refers to below.

A good place to start is Wage indicator’s overview of the statutory minimum wage for countries. IDH’s living wage action guide, an interactive website, allows different stakeholders to explore how to act towards living wages. Finally, the toolbox includes a link to ALIGN, a guidance tool for agri-food companies aiming to reduce complexity around the topic of living wage and living income. Their platform also provides links to reports experts and tools relevant to working on living wages and incomes.

Rights at work are an important part of the decent work concept, as they help to ensure that workers are able to enjoy the benefits of decent work…
